Red Bull District Ride

Being invited to Red Bull District Ride was a real honor. Growing up I watched the old District Ride events and thought it was so cool that there was a course through a beautiful city and a drop off of a castle. It was an inspiring moment last year for me making it onto the podium in Crankworx last year. Going to Germany, was wicked! I had never been across seas before and was looking forward to it.

I was travelling with Mitch Chubey, so I was pretty stoked to have companion on a trip for once, especially a long one. We flew from Vancouver to Toronto where we meant up with Anthony Messere, his Aunty Cheryl, Cam & Bonee McCaul and the Morpheus film crew. It was going to be a good plane ride J

After a long plane ride of watching movies and playing games on my iPhone we finally landed in Munich Germany. Wow this place is beautiful! The country side was amazing, and being a hunter I couldn’t believe all the deer in the hop fields. I was simply blown away in a matter of miles. We stopped at a gas station on our drive to Nuremburg for some beverages. We made Anthony buy them since he had never bought alcohol in his life. A few rode pops and we arrived at our hotel. It was a really nice set up they had for us. Red Bull pretty much owned the hotel for the week. Getting out of the van and having everything taken care of for you was a huge pleasure after a 36+ hour trip.

After building our bikes we decided to go check out the course. There wasn’t really much to check out other then the top drop and the final jump because they hadn’t finished everything yet but those guys know how to build! We met up with Aaron Chase the course designer, and amazing rider to show us around. We had some lunch and waited for everyone else to show up. We didn’t have anything to do the next day other then a rider dinner, which was amazing by the way. So we hit the town.

The next day was a struggle, now I am not saying we were hung over or anything, but because our sleeping patterns were totally out of whack. I went to bed a 4am and woke up at 4pm then the next night I went to bed at 12am and woke up at 430am and it just so happen that Greg Watts couldn’t sleep either so we met up and went for breakfast. Practice the first day was pretty fun, no one had any idea what to do so basically instead of a normal comp practice where everyone is kind of quiet and keeping to them selves, we all just hung out and rode every district together and figured things out. There was no pressure just a bunch of friends having fun, that’s the way it should be!

We all pretty much had our runs figured out mentally. We were supposed to do the first runs of qualifying that evening but none of us had enough practice and it was lightly raining which made all the features slippery, which is how I got hurt but I will to that in a second. It didn’t help that we were riding on cobblestone streets which were even slipperier that the wood. So we all came together and organized everything for tomorrow.

Woke up pretty early and went down for breakfast, couldn’t really eat much so I grabbed my pads and rode over to the course with Kurt Sorge and Eric Lawrenuk for our warm up session. We had to do 3 runs before finals. First run was to make sure the camera crews were set up in the right spots for the live feed and video production. Kind of a pain in the butt if you ask me because its one heck of a tiring ride down to the bottom. In my first run I was just styling and having fun on the course flowing my way down not doing any trick just getting my speeds right. I came into the skate park district and stepped up onto the box and that’s when it all went horribly wrong for me. It was early in the morning so the wetness on the features was not 100% dry yet. When I jumped on I planned to hit the step down transfer from the yellow bank to the purple hip landing. My front tire slid out on my as I was going up the bank and sent me half on the landing and half onto the fence. I slightly remember a second before impact that I knew this was not going to go over well. I slid my face across the cobblestone and hurt pretty much every part on my body. Being super winded on the ground gasping for air when I opened my eyes all I saw was German dudes hold white sheets around me as if I was dead or something. That really freaked me out so I torn the sheets out of there hands and slowly got up to my feet and walked away with the doctors. My injuries were a bruised sternum; both rib cages were bruised as well. My knee was super swollen, burn mark on my face and a nice wood cut on my hip. I couldn’t take deep breaths or I was in a lot of pain, walking hurt so much. I tried to ride but any quick movements put me down. It was not a good morning…. The Claw told me that I am lucky even to be walking from that crash. He watched it on the TV above, as he was next in line. So I guess I got out of it pretty well.

At least the bright side was that I was in Germany, a beautiful place and at an amazing event with all my friends and fans. So I sat back and watched the show go down!

Overall I had the best time ever, wish I could have ridden but that’s the she goes in this sport. One season you’re on top of your game, the next your injured at every event you attend. Puts a huge damper on everything.

Im Back!

Time to get this blog rolling again! Feels good to be back, but I am still battling injuries this spring. From shoulders, shoulder blades, both eyes, my nose and a concussion this season I am not off to the best start!

The best thing to do is keep you head up, and that is what I am doing! Always looking in the positive direction and taking what ever is thrown at me. Its been a battle this year already for me with injuries and the border.

Enough of me wining about my horrible start to the season, I will post the good times!

Hey guys!

I just got back from my trip to Ranchstyle and I didn't come back empty handed. Last year was my first time to Ranchstyle and I ended up taking first place. This year I trained hard all spring and was ready to defend my title. There was bigger range of competition this year and I like to call them my bro's. Eric Lawrenuk and Graham Agassiz made there first Ranchstyle appearance with a bang!

In practice saturday I had everything down to a patent. It was last light when I following Mike Metzger (Transition) down the course for another chill session. As we went of the 30 footer a gust of wind blew me awkward in my position as I was popping off the bike. I through the bike underneath me and said goodbye to the landing and hello flat bottom! I was NOT stoked! With bruising my heels last year during the competition I wanted to prove more this year being healthy, but now that was ruined!

I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to ride in the comp the next day, my foot was all the colors of the rainbow and fairly swollen. Instead of worrying about it, I just sat back with my foot elevated on ice all night and hoped for the best.

When morning came around I was feeling great! My foot had tons of flexibility and strength, I knew I was going to be able to compete today! Showed up at the Ranch, hit the step up a few times to get loose and then I headed to slope practice and did a few runs. I felt awesome!!!

After watching the amateurs compete it was our turn. The jam format was set at an hour and a half duration. I started of mellow then when I was warmed up, I started throwing down! I practice having lots of variety with the course and by that I mean being able to trick each line with multiple variations. Best decision I had ever made as it lead me to take first place again!

Bring home the title once again this year and it feels good to defend and win!

Weekend Warriors

So lately I have been building a ton at a forgotten riding spot close to my house. I built two step downs to the same landing and they are just amazing and good for training. I also built a big right hand hip with my buddies Wes, Dave and T Cliff. Finally finished them all and brought my bike up to virgin hit them all! Such a blast!

Early Season Building

The last two days I went and built a step down to train on. Its not a big scary one but a small safe one. I haven't ridden it yet as I just finished it this afternoon. I plan to ride it either tomorrow or within the next few days. My goals for it are 360's and Backflips, hopefully it will work out ;)

Today was a good day. I went to school until 12:00pm, then I rode my bike with my friends. We rode at the Sand Pits step up so we could try some new tricks with out getting hurt :p

The weather is warm and the snow is gone which means training time! Today was the first day back on the bike actually riding and focusing on getting consistent again. I had no problem with that today :) There were quite a few of us riding our secret little trick step up. I tried a few super flips but they didn't work out to well! One thing that I focused on was 360 Tail whips as I had them dialed at the end of last season and I still have them! This weekend, Justin Wyper, Dustin Guilding and John Rempel are coming to ride with us. Some good footage will come from that. As for now, here is a clip of one of my 3-whips!

2010 Fox Racing Shox Athlete!

I was just walking out the door yesterday morning and my grandma handed me a package that had come in the mail. I thought to myself, "I didn't order anything......?'' I read the writing on the big envelope and became not only breathless but speechless! It was from Fox Racing Shox, they had accepted me to become an athlete of there 2010 Grassroots team! Now you think, Grassroots huh? But NO! This means a ton! Its huge!

The thing that blew my mind was that I had not contacted Fox for a sponsorship. I knew that my manager Tyler Maine of PINKBIKE.COM had done some talking but I had no idea this was going to happen!

My dream is coming true!

Jump Jump Jumps!!

My weekend was super rad! It all started saturday morning waking up to rain!!!!! I got a call from Harrison that morning, we were trying to figure out what to do. I received a text message from my friend Brad Mills from Vernon. He was telling me that his jumps were super dialed in and it was beautiful over there. So, I called my friend and photographer Mike Kirk to see if he wanted to go and sure enough he had nothing better to do. It was a super rad day but unfortunately there were a few injuries. This time not to me but to my friends Aubrey and Brandon. Get Better Guys!! Mike and I shot for about an hour and a half so I would be able to write this blog :p

Sunday - My good friend and fellow shredder Brian Mueller spent the night so we could go to Harrison's house early. I woke up to smelling gourmet scrambled eggs thanks to my dad and a phone call from my friend Scott Milton asking if he and another friend could get a ride. I knew it was going to be a good session. Harrison's yard has become super dialed over the last few months. We added a slalom line and have been tweaking it tons to get it perfect, even though it isn't perfect yet, its the best place around in Kelowna. Harrison and I planned to film super hard for a school project that we are doing. The video we are making is also going to be played at the NWD 10 premier this Thursday. Pretty stoked on that!!!!

My highlight of the weekend though was definitely when I was at Harrison's. I recently had been landing 360 Tail Whips EVERY single time on different jumps and as well I 360'd The drop in the main line. I decided it was time to step my game up and throw together a competition worthy line. I consisted of a 360 Tail Whip on the first jump (gnarly) then a 360 off the drop followed by a tuck no hander on the long and low set up jump into a flip whip on the last jump that I slid out on, but it was a rowdy line.

I went down to Grand Junction Colorado for the second annual Ranchstyle Event. I competed in the slopestyle portion. I have been training for a while and it landed me on top of the podium! Practice makes perfect!

I want to thank everyone at Grassroots Cycles for hosting another great event and Transition for getting me there! I had a blast!

I received my 09 slope bike from Transition. I am riding the new 4" Double. There still is a fair bit of snow around so I can't ride it on anything to amazing yet, but I am going to try and head out to the Island here soon and start training.

The Snow Is Melting!!!!

The weather is finally on the positive side and the snow is melting, which means......BUILDING AND RIDING AGAIN!!! I am so exicted!

As well as January is my last day of school until grade 12! Why? Well my parents and I feel that I will be missing a lot of classes traveling to comps and filming etc. So, I talked to the career councillor at my school and he is with drawling me from OKM highschool and I will be completing my last academic online. So STOKED!!!
